Wash your makeup brushes once a week

Having healthier skin means having cleaner makeup brushes. Old skin cells, dirt and bacteria accumulate in brushes that are not cleaned weekly. What do you clean them with? Personally, I use a gentle shampoo. If you have sensitive skin, I would suggest looking up a brush cleanser that is made with organic products.

If you’re not leaving the house, don’t apply makeup

It’s important to give your skin a breather once in a while. If you’re not going anywhere, don’t wear makeup that day. It can’t be good to have your face covered in makeup 24/7. Embrace your natural skin. Not to mention, giving it a breather once in a while may improve your skin i.e. less breakouts. Not having to apply makeup + healthier skin = a win-win situation.

Use a moisturizer with SPF before applying makeup

Moisturizing prevents wrinkles and dry, crackly skin. It’s crucial to moisturize your face every day for healthier skin. More importantly, use a moisturizer with SPF. Sun damage is a very real thing and it ages you. It’s best to protect your face at all costs from the sun in order to maintain a youthful glow as you age. Note: you should only moisturize ONCE a day. Moisturizing too much can cause oily skin and acne.

Do not apply more than one layer of makeup

First off, when you’re wearing too much makeup, everyone notices. Makeup is supposed to enhance your natural beauty. Wearing too much not only draws in negative attention, but also clogs your pores. If you’re applying makeup correctly, you should not need more than one layer. Our go-to makeup artist, Samantha, swears by the "less is more" concept when it comes to makeup application. Exfoliate your face twice a week

The skin regimen that I’ve been following for years keeps my skin looking fresh and pimple free (for the most part). I use CeraVe’s gentle face wash for the majority of the week and then Neutrogena’s Pomegranate Face Scrub on my two exfoliation days. It’s important to exfoliate because it digs deep into your pores and clears out any bacteria that can cause breakouts. However, exfoliating too much can also cause breakouts. Finding the balance and products that work best for you takes time, but stay patient and give a new regimen a full two weeks before trying something else. Sometimes, it takes that long for a product to really do its thing.

Use gentler (preferably, organic) products

If your skin is sensitive, stay away from harsh products. Instead, opt for organic products. Our designer Brianna continues to see great results from Lush cosmetics. Lush not only has organic skin care products, but also organic makeup products. Bonus: they do not test on animals! #SaveTheFurBabies.
